The Top 101 Players of the Open Era--an Update

The first Yokozuna-Tennis top 101 ranking of the open era was compiled right after Wimbledon 2008. Two grand slam tournaments have been played since,thus it is time to take another look.

Men’s Ranking

Dai-Yokozuna (great Grand Champion) Roger Federer (13 GS titles—4 finals—3 semifinals—2 quarterfinals) remains where he is, inspite of another grand slam title at the US Open and a lost final down under. Well, as the #2 of the open era he cannot be ranked much higher—only the great Rod Laver remains ahead of him.

To pass Laver, Federer would need to win the French Open or close to 20 grand slam tournaments, both of which seems unlikely. Just behind Federer follow the other two Dai-Yokozuna Pete Sampras and Bjorn Borg—Sampras because of Federer’s greater versatility across surfaces ad greater peak-dominance; Borg because of Federer’s larger number of GS titles. But I am well aware that these three could be ranked in any order.

The new Australian Open champion, Yokozuna (=Grand Champion) Rafael Nadal (6-2-2-2) moves up one rank to #13, behind Stefan Edberg, and ahead of John Newcombe. As Edberg, Nadal has won 6 slams now, but for Edberg this was the harvest of an entire career, while Nadal is still only 22 years old and may enjoy many more years at the top.

Let us therefore look ahead a little: a 7th title—possibly at the upcoming French Open—would propell Nadal to #11. An 8th title would get him to #9, a 9th title all to #7. Should Nadal win 10 titles and therefore become a Dai-Yokozuna he would take the #5 spot, currently occupied by the great Ivan Lendl.

Sekiwake (=Junior Champion I) and former Ozeki (=Champion) Andy Roddick (1-3-5-7) added a semi- and a quarterfinal to his career record, but he remains #26, sandwiched between fellow career-high Ozeki Yevgeni Kafelnikov and Michael Chang. Roddick is already the highest ranked one-slam champion of the open era, without another title he will hardly be able to move ahead of two-slam champions like Kafelnikov, Stan Smith, Pat Rafter or Marat Safin.

Ozeki Novak Djokovic (1-1-4-2) also piled up another semi- and a quarterfinal and moves up three spots to #37, behind Juan Carlos Ferrero but ahead of Johann Kriek (both career-high Ozeki).

Finally, two players newly enter the top 101: Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Andy Murray, both career-high Sekiwake (although currently ranked lower). Each has a career record of 0-1-0-1, they occupy #95 and #96 in the open era rankings. To make room, Aaron Krickstein and Jose Higueras, two career-high Komusubi (=Junior Champion II), dropped out of the top 101.

Other still active players with a ranking in the top 101 are: Lleyon Hewitt (career-high O, #20), Marat Safin (O, 21), Juan Carlos Ferrero (O, 36), David Nalbandian (S, 56), Nikolay Davydenko (S, 64), Fernando Gonzalez (S, 74), Marcos Baghdatis (S, 78), Tommy Haas (S, 84), Rainer Schuttler (S, 86), and Arnaud Clement (S, 88).

Women’s Ranking

New Dai-Yokozuna Serena Williams (10-3-2-10) stays at #7, in spite of winning two more grand slam titles. But Serena may soon move higher. An 11th title would get her past Monica Seles—Seles won “only” 9 slams, but gets some bonus in my rankings due to the violent interruption of her career. A 12th title and Serena would pass the great Billie Jean King. The top four ladies of the open era—Margaret Court, Steffi Graf, Martina Navratilova, and Chris Evert—are probably out of reach though, having won between 18 and 24 grand slam titles.

Serena’s sister, Yokozuna Venus Williams (7-6-4-12) reached the quarterfinals at US Open and remains at #9, between Evonne Goolagong and Justine Henin.

Former Ozeki Svetlana Kuznetsova (1-2-1-6) reached the quarterfinals down under but remains unchanged at #28, placed between fellow career-high Ozeki Mima Jausovec and Ana Ivanovic. Re-promoted Ozeki Elena Dementieva (0-2-5-3) made two more semifinals, moves up three spots to #39 and is now placed below Andrea Jaeger (O) and above Pam Shriver (S).

The biggest jump made fresh-baked Ozeki, Australian Open finalist and US Open semifinalist Dinara Safina (0-2-1-2), who improves from #67 to #47. US Open finalist and career-high Sekiwake Jelena Jankovic (0-1-4-1) climbs 8 spots to a new # 49 ranking.

Veteran Patty Schnyder (0-0-1-6), a career-high Komusubi, reached yet another quarterfinal and is now #70 (from #72). Schnyder is the second-highest ranked career Komusubi of the open era, behind only Regina Marsikova (K, 60).

Former Sekiwake Marion Bartoli (0-1-0-1) gains four spots and a new ranking of #78, after reaching the quarterfinals down under. Jelena Dokic (0-0-1-3), a career-high Komusubi, had a fabulous comeback in her adopted home country Australia, reaching the quarterfinal and improving from #89 to #85.

Other still active players in the top 101 are: Maria Sharapova (O, 17), Amelie Mauresmo (O, 22), Ana Ivanovic (O, 29), Natalia Petrova (S, 68), Nicole Vaidisova (S, 72), Daniela Hantuchova (K, 84), and Ana Chakvetadze (K, 92). Lindsay Davenport (Y, 14) stopped playing to give birth to a second child and may have retired for good.

2008 in Review

The top 8 players are currenlty fighting out the end-year championship, but Grand Slam tennis ended with the U.S. Open in September. Here is the resumee for 2008.

11 male and 13 female players held Sanyaku rank over the course of 2008. 4 male and 5 female players were High Sanyaku (active Yokozuna or Ozeki).

7 male and 8 female players got promoted. 3 male and 3 female players climbed to to a new career-high rank: Rafael Nadal (Yokozuna), Andy Murray (Sekiwake), Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (Sekiwake), Dinara Safina (Sekiwake), Agnieszka Radwanska (Komosubi), and Jie Zheng (Komosubi). There was no new Ozeki promotion.

The mae player of 2008 title is shared between Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal . On the ladies' side it goes to Serena Williams. Federer and Nadal reached all four grand slam semi-finals; Nadal's two titles contrast with Federer's one title and two lost finals. Serena Williams had a relatively weak first half of the season, but restablished herself as the women to beat with a victory at the U.S. Open and a narrowly lost final (against her sister Venus) at Wimbledon.

The retirement of 2008 was Justine Henin's surprising withdrawal from professional tennis before the French Open, leaving the Williams sisters as the only active female Yokozuna. The Williamses promptly re-took control of the scene in the second half of the year.

The promotion of 2008 was undoubtedly Rafael Nadal's elevation to Yokozuna, as a result of winning back-to-back titles at the French Open and Wimbledon. Nadal is the 15th male Yokozuna of the open era. He had been Ozeki since 2006.

The rising stars of 2008 were Andy Murray on the mens' side and Dinara Safina on the ladies'. Murray finally made his breakthrough on the big stage, reaching first the Wimbledon quarterfinals and then the U.S. Open final. Murray ends the year as at Sekiwake, a semifinal at the Australian Open 2009 would get him all the way to Ozeki. Safina had already been a Komosubi back in 2006. In 2008 she advanced one step further to Sekiwake, by reaching the French Open final and adding a U.S. Open semifinal to her tally at year-end.

The best Ozeki of 2008 was Novak Djokovic. In fact, by end-2008 he was the only Ozeki, as Rafael Nadal got promoted to Yokozuna, and all other Ozeki in 2008--Andy Roddick, Maria Sharapova, and Ana Ivanovic--lost the rank before the end of the year. Djokovic was an example of consistency, winning the Australian Open (his first slam title), and reaching the semifinals at the French and U.S. Open. A title at the French Open would have propelled Djokovic to Yokozuna, but this would perhaps have come a bit early.

The best lower Sanyaku players of 2008 were Andy Murray and Jelena Jankovic. Jankovic entered 2008 as a Komosubi, reached the semifinals at the Australian and French Open, and toppped the year with a hard fought final at the U.S. Open. She ends the year as Sekiwake (and ATP #1), but like Murray, a semifinal at the Australian Open 2009 would elevate Jankovic to Ozeki, a rank she has been close to for some time.

The comeback of 2008 was staged by Elena Demetieva. An Ozeki back in 2005 who had since fallen out of contention, Dementieva reached the quarterfinals of the French Open and semifinals at Wimbledon and the U.S. Open, therefore returning to Sekiwake. Another semifinal down under and Dementieva is again Ozeki. There was no similarly striking comeback on the mens' side, although the returns of former Ozeki Marat Safin and former Sekiwake Rainer Schuettler to the Sanyaku ranks at Wimbledeon (the semifinal made both a Komosubi for one tournament) deserve mentioning.

Finally, the decline of the year trophy is shared between Andy Roddick and Nikolay Davydenko on the men's side, and Maria Sharapova and Svetlana Kuznetsova onthe ladies'. Roddick missed the quarterfinals of the first three slams, falling from Ozeki to kadoban Ozeki to Sekiwake and finally to Komosubi. He then held on to the lowest Sanyaku rank with a quarterfinal participation at the U.S. Open. Davydenko entered the year as Sekiwake and possible Ozeki prospect, but dropped out the the Sanyaku ranks altogether after four disappointing slams. Sharapova had an excellent start of the year, winning her third grand slam title at the Australian Open and regaining her former Ozeki rank. An injury-plagued rest of the season made her miss the quarterfinals at all subsequent slams, however, resulting in an end-year rank of Komosubi. Kuznetsova came into the 2008 season as the U.S. Open finalist and seemed close to regaining Ozeki rank, but disappointing results at Wimbledon and the U.S. Open made her drop out of the Sanyaku ranks altogether.

Tournament-Specific Sanyaku Ranks by Player

This second part of the article analyzes tournament specific (TS) Sanyaku ranks by player. Since the beginning of the ope era only two players became TS Yokozuna at all four Grand Slams, both of them ladies: Martina Navratilova and Steffi Graf (see the tables below the article).

Next are Margaret Court, Chris Evert, Roger Federer and Ivan Lendl, whose lifetime yield is three TS Yokozuna ranks and one TS Ozeki rank. However, Court would be a four-fold TS Yokozuna were her pre open era Wimbledon results also counted. Evert arguably misses the full score only because she skipped the Australian Open in her prime. No such factors apply to Federer and Lendl though. Both have one genuine "weak" Slam where the made it "only" to Ozeki: the French Open in the case of Federer, and Wimbledon for Lendl.

Stefan Edberg and Monica Seles also assembled three TS specific Yokozuna ranks, and complement it with a Sekiwake rank at the fourth slam. The "ordinary" Yokozuna Lendl and Edberg therefore outscore Dai-Yokozuna Pete Sampras (TS Yokozuna at Wimbledon and the US Open) on the TS count. Rod Laver and Bjorn Borg are also further down the list, but this is because Laver's open era career was brief, while Borg skipped the Australian Open in most years.

In general, there is a fairly good match between a player's overall career Sanyaku rank and the highest TS rank he achieved. There are important exceptions, however.

• Six male and one female overall Ozeki attained a TS Yokozuna rank: Guillermo Vilas and Johan Kriek at the Australian Open; Jan Kodes, Sergi Bruguera and Gustavo Kuerten at the French Open; and Pat Rafter and Tracy Austin at the US Open.
• Conversely, two overall Yokozuna--Hana Mandlikova and Lindsay Davenport--did not move above Ozeki in the TS rankings.
• Career-high Sekiwake Wendy Turnbull attained TS Ozeki rank at two Grand Slam tournaments; 12 male and 5 female overall Sekiwake did so at one Grand Slam tournament.
• There is even one overall Komosubi--Regina Marsikova--who is TS Ozeki at the French Open. This combination is possible only when a player advanced to the semifinals (but no further) of the same tournament three consecutive times--which is exactly what Marsikova did at Roland Garros between 1977 and 1979.
• Finally, 6 male and 5 female overall Ozeki did not attain any TS Ozeki rank. These are: Roscoe Tanner, Kevin Curren, Miloslav Mecir, Petr Korda, Carlos Moya, Magnus Norman, Renata Tomanova, Sue Barker, Dianne Fromholtz, Betty Stove, and Anastasia Myskina.
